Reviving Handloom Ecosystem

Microsoft India (R&D) Pvt. Limited initiated Project Reweave in 2016 as part of its Philanthropies efforts, with the aim to revive the handloom weaving ecosystem in India. This is a multi-year program with the first pilot in the state of Telangana. The state has close to ~120000 weavers and about 10,000 GI tagged looms and is home to world famous weaves like Ikat, Gadwal, Naryanpet, Gollabama, and Mahadevpur. Our NGO partner, Chaitanya Bharathi works directly with weaver families and provides them infrastructure, financing and marketing support to help keep their weaving traditions alive by sustaining livelihoods.

This initiative led to a 20% increase in wages in addition to the fact that they now had continuous access to markets through social enterprise outlets and national exhibitions. The project is also leveraging Microsoft Sangam platform to train weaving artisans at Digital Empowerment Centers, specially set up for this purpose, in basic computer skills, business communication, and designing for handloom using CAD. This year, the project has launched this e-commerce platform to help the weavers sell their products online with their personal signature on their products.
